Physician Stories

Goodman Campbell Welcomes Dr. Bryan A. Schatmeyer!

From Music to Medicine: A Journey into Neurosurgery

For as long as he can remember, medicine has been part of Dr. Bryan A. Schatmeyer‘s life. Growing up with a father who worked as a nurse at the Veterans Affairs hospital, he was introduced early to the world of healthcare. Shadowing in the operating room and volunteering at the hospital gave him a firsthand look at patient care—and sparked a lifelong passion.

“I loved talking to patients, hearing their stories, and realizing how much trust is placed in physicians during moments of vulnerability,” he reflects. That early exposure became the foundation of his career in medicine.

It wasn’t until medical school, however, that he discovered his calling in neurosurgery. The precision, complexity, and high stakes of the specialty struck a chord. As a classically trained violinist, he saw an unexpected connection between surgery and music. “Both require technical mastery, intense focus, and the ability to remain composed under pressure,” he explains. “Like performing a difficult piece, neurosurgery requires not just skill, but the ability to deliver that skill with grace and purpose.”

That blend of human connection and technical excellence continues to inspire his work today.

Why Goodman Campbell Brain and Spine?

When it came time to choose where to train and practice, Goodman Campbell Brain and Spine stood out immediately. Nationally recognized for its excellence in neurosurgery, the practice combines patient-centered care with academic involvement and innovation.

“What impressed me most was the culture,” he shares. “Everyone, from physicians to staff, works seamlessly together and treats one another like family. That kind of environment is rare, and I knew it was the kind of place where I could truly thrive.”

Clinical Interests and Expertise

His clinical focus lies in complex spine, with a particular interest in spinal deformity correction. Helping patients with conditions like degenerative scoliosis—where posture, mobility, and overall quality of life are severely impacted—is especially meaningful.

“These cases are often challenging and require an individualized surgical plan,” he explains. “But when performed with precision and care, the results can be life-changing.”

In addition, he is trained in minimally invasive surgical techniques, which allow for smaller incisions, less tissue disruption, and faster recovery times. By combining advanced deformity correction with minimally invasive approaches, he aims to bring comprehensive, patient-centered spine care to Goodman Campbell.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Neurosurgery

He envisions a future where neurosurgery becomes increasingly personalized. Advances in imaging, navigation, and machine learning are opening the door to treatments tailored to each patient’s unique anatomy and goals.

“In spinal deformity, for example, understanding patient-specific alignment parameters—rather than relying on generic templates—leads to better outcomes,” he notes. Emerging technologies such as robotics, augmented reality, and intraoperative monitoring will only enhance precision and safety in the years ahead.

Life Beyond the Operating Room

Outside of medicine, he finds balance and inspiration in travel, music, and time with family. Traveling abroad with his wife is one of his greatest joys. “Exploring ancient cities, visiting historic landmarks, and reflecting on how past civilizations shaped the world we live in today gives me a deeper appreciation for progress—including in medicine.”

At home, he enjoys playing the violin, spending time with their two dogs, and caring for a horse that he and his wife own together. Working with horses, he says, teaches patience, attention to detail, and calmness—qualities that carry over into his work as a surgeon.

A Unique Blend of Passions

From the discipline of classical violin to the precision of neurosurgery, and from the quiet patience of horse care to the energy of global travel, his journey reflects a balance of science, art, and humanity. At Goodman Campbell Brain and Spine, he brings not only advanced clinical expertise but also a deep commitment to compassion, curiosity, and innovation—qualities that will shape the future of patient care.
