Geoffrey O’Malley, MD
PGY1

Dr. Dragun did his undergraduate study in chemical engineering and chemistry at the University of Texas, Austin. After graduating at UT Austin, he took a job as a reservoir engineer at ExxonMobil, where he quickly realized this was not for him. On he went to medical school at the University of Texas Southwestern with the intent of pursuing surgery.

Neurosurgery appealed to Dr. Dragun because it allowed him the opportunity to help patients through what is likely one of their most difficult times in life. His current interests include spine surgery, specifically deformity surgery. He is also interested in treating and caring for brain cancer.

Dr. Dragun is excited for the opportunity, both in terms of training and shaping the culture of the program. Additionally, he’s never lived outside of Texas, and looks forward to having four seasons in Indiana! Some of his hobbies include playing piano, outdoor activities (hiking, skiing, climbing, running and backpacking), cooking and reading.

He has a list of hikes around the world that he hopes to check off, including parts of Chile and Argentina!

Dr. O’Malley did his undergraduate study in economics at Boston College. He then went on to complete medical school at the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine in New Jersey. His love for medicine began early: he volunteered on his town’s emergency squad as a cadet member responding to 911 calls beginning in his sophomore year of high school.

During his senior year, a 6-week internship with a former hockey coach and a neurosurgeon, the young Dr. O’Malley learned all he could about the practice. HeĀ spent the entire summer and subsequent summersĀ studying the intricacies andĀ variety of complex cases and the principles of multiple surgical specialties and critical care needed to treat neurosurgical patients. From that point on, neurosurgery was his focus.

His current interests are neurotrauma and spinal disorders, with a strong interest in health care policy, outcomes and registry science, cost effectiveness, and quality improvement. Dr. O’Malley says he is excited to come to Indiana and “trade inĀ Bruce Springsteen for John Mellencamp.”

Some of his hobbies includeĀ golfing, running, crossfit, hockey, and lacrosse. He looks forward to trying all of the food options in Indianapolis, attending the Indy 500, and completing theĀ Pete Dye Golf Trail.
