Plan Ahead

What is an ischemic stroke?

Ischemic stroke occurs when an area of the brain does not receive enough blood and oxygen. This may be caused by blockage in an artery carrying blood to the brain. With a lack of nutrient and oxygenated blood, brain cells may begin to die within minutes. Time is especially important when a blockage involves an artery which supplies a large area of the brain.

Know what to do in case of a stroke.

When having a stroke, you may suddenly experience some or all of the following:

  • Numbness or weakness in the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
  • Confusion, trouble speaking or difficulty understanding speech
  • Trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance, or lack of coordination
  • Severe headache with no known cause

We often say ā€œtime is brainā€ to remind patients that time is critical when treating stroke. When identifying common symptoms an easy reminder is to:

Think F.A.S.T.
  • Face drooping
  • Arm tingling
  • Speech difficulty
  • Time to call 9-1-1

Stroke can be complex. But complex is not a problem for us.

Ischemic Stroke

In ischemic stroke, a vessel blockage keeps part of the brain from receiving enough blood and oxygen.

Hemorrhagic Stroke

Hemorrhagic stroke involves an intracranial hemorrhage (blood loss) in or around the brain.

Thrombectomy

This is a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure to remove a clot from an artery of the brain.
