Julius M. Goodman, M.D., completed his neurosurgical residency at Indiana University in 1968 and began his professional career as an assistant professor of neurosurgery at Indiana University Medical Center in 1968. He subsequently co-founded the Indianapolis Neurosurgical Group (now known as Goodman Campbell Brain and Spine) in 1970.

Dr. Goodman was a fierce advocate for superior neuroradiology and superspecialization, and was known as a pioneer in his field as his group became the first in Indiana to perform a microlumbar discectomy, clip aneurysms with the microscope, perform transsphenoidal pituitary surgery and treat trigeminal neuralgia by microvascular decompression. They also introduced radiosurgery for the treatment of brain tumors and vascular malformations, stereotactic biopsy of brain lesions, neuronavigation as an aid to cranial surgery and spinal instrumentation in complex spinal disorders by neurosurgeons.

Dr. Goodman’s devotion to his patients and his passion for neurosurgical education were legendary. Dr. Goodman organized and directed the American Association of Neurological Surgeons Oral Board Review Course  for many years, and the course was renamed the AANS Goodman Oral Board Review Course in his honor.

Following Dr. Goodman’s death in 2008, the Methodist Health Foundation paid tribute to Dr. Goodman by providing funding for an annual scholarship for medical students who intend to pursue a residency in neurosurgery and who demonstrate the potential to become fine neurosurgeons in the manner of Dr. Goodman, and exemplify the many outstanding qualities he possessed: unparalleled integrity, extraordinary care of patients, dedication to research, and service to his beloved profession…

Each year, the Methodist Health Foundation awards scholarships to deserving medical students and residents pursuing a neurosurgical specialty. The funds for this scholarship come from the bequest of Julius Goodman, MD, founder of Indianapolis Neurosurgical Group (now Goodman Campbell Brain and Spine) and recognized leader and educator in the field of neurosurgery.
